Delegates from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) across Alabama gathered in Montgomery for the Alabama State Council meeting, according to an April 7 announcement. The event brought together more than 45 participants to discuss legislative issues, union solidarity, and actions affecting working families.
The meeting focused on defending union rights, addressing corporate influence, protecting retirement security, supporting veterans, and increasing civic engagement. These topics are important as they directly impact workers’ livelihoods and the well-being of their communities.
Attendees heard from elected officials and political candidates who pledged support for pro-worker legislation. Craig Martin, IAM Southern Territory General Vice President, said: “This is about making sure working people have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives. We’re fighting back against corporate power and pushing for policies that put workers first because when working families advance, our communities advance.”
IAM Political and Legislative Director Hasan Solomon addressed the importance of political involvement by union members. “Being politically engaged isn’t optional – it’s essential,” said Solomon. “The decisions being made at every level of government directly impact our union, our jobs, our rights, and our futures. When IAM members show up, they listen.” Delegates also spent time at the Alabama State Capitol lobbying lawmakers on behalf of workers.
Rickie Langford, IAM Alabama State Council President, commented on the unity shown during the gathering: “This meeting shows the power of bringing members together with a shared purpose. When we unite, educate, and take action, we can move the needle for working people across Alabama.”
A historic milestone was marked with Michelle Hunt of IAM Local 2003 becoming the council’s first woman president. Hunt said: “I’m honored to be elected and to serve alongside such dedicated members. I’m committed to continuing the work of pushing forward an agenda that puts working people first and strengthens our union across Alabama.” Other officers elected include Secretary-Treasurer Marc Johnson (Local 2003), Vice Presidents Duane Williams (Local 2003), Anthony Holton (Local 2003), Rickie Langford (Local 44), and James Tate (Local 2766).
The council reaffirmed its commitment to building worker power through education and direct action.
