The U.S. Census Bureau will begin an embargo on the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates starting September 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The public release of these estimates is scheduled for September 11.
The ACS provides data on various aspects of the nation’s population and housing, including language spoken at home, education levels, commuting patterns, employment status, mortgage and rent details, income, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. It remains the only source for local estimates on most of its more than 40 topics.
According to the Census Bureau, “The one-year statistics will be available to embargo subscribers beginning Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. ET for all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, all congressional districts and metropolitan statistical areas, and other geographic areas with populations of 65,000 or more.”
Embargo subscribers can access these statistics from Tuesday morning until Thursday just after midnight Eastern Time. Distribution services are not allowed to share news stories or data files under embargo before the official release time. The Census Bureau advises that “Wire and distribution services are prohibited from distributing embargoed news stories and data files before the public release date and time. For more information, refer to the Census Bureau’s embargo policy.” All related data products will become publicly accessible by 10 a.m. Eastern Time on September 11 through their website and associated tools.
Registration for embargo access is available at https://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/embargoed_releases.
