As the fall season arrives in Florida, citrus growers are preparing for the annual harvest of the state’s signature fruit. Steve Johnson, Chairman of the Florida Citrus Commission, highlighted this period as a significant time for those involved in the industry.
“While most places north of here mark the autumn season by the changing color of the leaves, Floridians mark the beginning of fall another way . . . by the harvesting of our state’s heritage fruit — Florida Citrus. It’s one of my favorite times of year, and for a good reason. We’ve worked hard all year for it, and now, Florida Citrus is ripe for the picking,” Johnson said.
He noted that there is a strong sense of determination and optimism among growers during this period. The recent meeting of the Florida Citrus Commission (FCC), held on October 22, reflected these sentiments with full attendance from its 11-member commission and participation from industry partners who provided updates and recommendations.
Johnson also reminded stakeholders that FCC meetings are not typically held in November. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 17 at 9:00 a.m., to be held at their headquarters in Bartow.
Steve Johnson serves as Chairman of the Florida Citrus Commission and manages Johnson Harvesting, Inc., located in Wauchula.
