County and specialty medical societies have been invited to nominate physicians for positions on the Florida Medical Association’s (FMA) reference committees. The deadline for nominations is set for 5 p.m. ET on Friday, May 9.

Reference committees play a role in reviewing proposed resolutions before they are presented to the FMA House of Delegates (HOD) at the Annual Meeting. Each committee consists of at least five voting members from the HOD who are not current FMA officers or members of the Board of Governors (BOG). Members are chosen by the FMA Speaker and Vice Speaker.

According to the FMA, “Once a reference committee has received direct feedback on the resolutions being considered, the committee members deliberate privately to make a group decision about each resolution before presenting their recommendations in a detailed report to the HOD. A resolution that passes the House and is adopted by the BOG becomes FMA policy.”

Delegates will be able to provide online testimony regarding any properly filed resolution starting Monday, June 23, at 9 a.m. ET through Thursday, July 3, at 9 p.m. ET. When submitting testimony, delegates must state whether they support or oppose each resolution.

The reference committees will hold executive sessions during the week beginning Monday, July 7, to prepare their reports. These reports will be published online ahead of the Annual Meeting, which starts Friday, July 25. Delegates can debate committee recommendations during in-person hearings scheduled for Saturday, July 26.
