Florida State University Panama City is set to host a free financial literacy workshop titled “Your Financial Future” on Tuesday, October 14. The event will be led by Joe Calhoun, Ph.D., director and teaching professor at the Gus A. Stavros Center for the Advancement of Free Enterprise and Economic Education at FSU.
The seminar will consist of three sessions. The first session, from 11 to 11:45 a.m., will address financial scams and fraud. The second session, scheduled from noon to 12:45 p.m., will focus on credit and FICO scores. The third session, from 1 to 1:45 p.m., will cover investing and retirement planning.
Diana Simpson, CFP, coordinator of the event and faculty member at FSU Panama City, explained the purpose of the workshop: “The goal of these workshops is to strengthen financial literacy and empower individuals to make informed decisions about using credit wisely, managing debt effectively, and saving for long-term goals—while avoiding pitfalls such as financial fraud.”
Each session includes a question-and-answer segment, allowing participants to attend any or all sessions based on their interests. Attendees will also receive a light lunch provided by ChampionsFirst Credit Union. The workshop will take place in the Holley Academic Center’s St. Joe Community Foundation Lecture Hall at 4750 Collegiate Drive.
Simpson commented on Calhoun’s teaching style: “Dr. Calhoun brings a unique blend of insight and humor to his presentations, making complex financial topics both engaging and accessible. I always look forward to his workshops—they’re as entertaining as they are educational.”
Joe Calhoun holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Georgia and an MBA from DePaul University. His research primarily focuses on the economics of education, and he has received multiple teaching and service excellence awards. He currently resides in Tallahassee with his family.
