Panama City, Florida, will host the commissioning ceremony for the USS Pierre (LCS 38) on November 15, 2025, at Port Panama City. The event marks the official entry of the ship into active service with the U.S. Navy.
The USS Pierre is notable as the nineteenth and final Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship to be built. This concludes the production of this class of ships, which are known for their agility and versatility in naval operations.
Named after Pierre, South Dakota, the USS Pierre continues a tradition as the third Navy vessel to carry that name. Previous ships include the SS Pierre Victory and a World War II submarine chaser.
Larissa Thune Hargens, who is from South Dakota, will serve as ship sponsor during the ceremony. She will give the traditional order: “man our ship and bring her to life!”, officially marking the ship’s entry into service.
After commissioning, the USS Pierre will join its fleet in San Diego, California. There it will support missions aimed at enhancing maritime security and maintaining a global naval presence.
The ceremony is expected to feature full Navy traditions such as crew reporting aboard, ceremonial honors, and raising of colors. Civic leaders from across the country are scheduled to attend.
“The City of Panama City is proud to play a role in this significant milestone for the U.S. Navy and the Gulf Coast, celebrating the continued partnership between the military and the community,” according to city officials.
